About Data Storage Units

Digital data is measured in bytes, with larger units based on powers of 1,000 (decimal) or 1,024 (binary). Modern systems typically use the decimal convention where 1 KB = 1,000 bytes:

• Byte (B): The basic unit of digital information, typically 8 bits
• Kilobyte (KB): 1,000 bytes, used for small text files and documents
• Megabyte (MB): 1,000,000 bytes, common for photos, music files, and small videos
• Gigabyte (GB): 1,000,000,000 bytes, used for HD movies, large applications, and phone storage
• Terabyte (TB): 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, typical for hard drives and cloud storage
• Petabyte (PB): 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes, used in data centers and enterprise storage

Note: Computer systems sometimes use binary prefixes where 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Our converters use the decimal SI standard (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) as defined by the International System of Units. Understanding these conversions helps with managing file sizes, storage capacity, and data transfer rates.
